The Fall of House Misra is a short visual novel game originally made for Yandere Game Jam (2022). It had a major graphical overhaul in 2024 during Otome Jam 2024 and Josei Jam 2024. The 2022 version is kept for posterity's sake.

The Story

The game follows the events that led to the demise of House Misra. At the center of it is the heroine, Shani, who is recovering from a battle injury back at the palace, while her father fights the war against House Desai. Shani wishes to get back to the battlefield, however, her plans are ruined when her father urges her to accept a marriage to form an alliance with House Narand. On top of it all, he sends her a knight to fend off assassins.

Can Shani make the right decisions for herself and her people when she doesn't know whom to trust?

The 2024 Game Specs (v.1.1)

The 2022 Game Specs (v.1.0)

i loved the extended set and the parallax effect in this -- really nicely done

Thans for playing! I'm pleased with the result myself :)

Great work! I enjoyed this a lot. I appreciate the artwork being "set on stage", if that makes wording makes sense. Not as easy to parse facial expressions and connect to each character's personality, but it's a nice break of formula. It also made the backgrounds important beyond setting the mood, because characters interacted with them

Just realized you made an updated version too, wow! I'm looking forward to playing it. I also regret saying that it's not easy to parce facial expressions on the old art, because it actually is. Especially since there's very good body language.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! I wanted to experiment and see how a visual novel would work as a sort of theatre play. The expressions are challenging, and I tried to make poses that could work in several situations and moods. Then again, drawing more poses is more work than drawing more expressions... In hindsight, side images (character portraits in the dialogue box) might have helped with better conveying the characters' emotions, but I wonder if they would've distracted the viewer from what's happening on the "stage".

I explored this style further in Curse in Bloom, which is more like a mixture between a play and a comic book. There I used character close-ups which helped with the expressions a lot.

While I don't think I'll add more features to Fall of House Misra, I'd like to see it colored. One day... :D

The music was beautiful so enchanting and the art-work so fitting and fabulous in your game.  You have real talent for story-telling but I was so desperate for one happy ending for our beloved protagonist that tried so hard to save her kingdom and people.  I hope you create a bit of sunshine in your next game. ๐ŸŒž

I made this game a tragedy from the get-go (the title doesn't really hide it ๐Ÿ˜…), so it doesn't have any happy endings, unfortunately. I tried to make the endings so that the player finds out new things from them, even though they're sad. I am working on adding more graphics and audio to the game, but I probably won't touch the story. I do have other games in plans with some happy endings. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for giving it a try, anyway! I will take your cat's suggestions for improvement into consideration.

I lied! The game has now some happy(ish?) endings too!

Wow excited to play the new endings! :)
